Now faith is the substance of things hoped for the evidence of things not seen. Heb. 11:1
What is hope? It means to expect with confidence, to desire with assurance, to rely on with certainty, to trust with the guarantee and to believe with the knowledge.
He has identified us as His own by placing the Holy Spirit in our hearts as the first installment of everything He will give us. He set His seal of ownership on us. You as a believer belong to God, you are His very own child.
He does this by placing His seal, His stamp, His mark upon believers with the Holy Spirit.
His presence within us is God's guarantee that he really will give us all that He promised; and the Spirit's seal upon us means that God has already purchased us and that He guarantees to bring us to Himself. (Eph. 1:14)
His presence within us means the Holy Spirit.
So we have confident expectation, it means we wait with anticipation when we will be in heaven. It also means we look and long for. There is a man in the bible whose name was Simion, he had been waiting many years to see the Savior. Finally he held Him in his arms when Jesus was brought to the temple. Simion said:
Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word: For mine eyes have seen thy salvation. (Lk.2:29,30)
The confidence, waiting, anticipation came to pass, as he held the Savior in his arms.
It also means eagerly looking forward to, confident knowledge, inward possession, and spiritual security. We don't do things now to get God's favor we just trust Him.
The Spirit itself beareth with our spirit, that we are the children of God. (Rom.8:16)
The world hopes for what it can see, the believer's hope is spiritual, his hope is in God.
The world hopes it will win a big lottery or get a big, nice vehicle. This hope comes from the outside, the believer's hope comes from inside him. He knows that what God says He guarantees it.
As the Holy Spirit is in the believer, he experinces the things of the Spirit now. He experinces the anointing Presence of the Holy Spirit as he preaches, sings, prays and other things he does for God. The Holy Spirit's Presence is only a taste of what is in the future, when our hope becomes reality as we are in His presence in heaven.
So hope is a sure or unquestionable assurance of things promised but not yet seen.
