The Lord told Moses to make a box to be placed inside the Holy of Holies where God was. The box was to be called the Ark of the Covenant. It was to be made from the wood of a certain tree God chose.
God chose a tree, a cross on which His Son died for our sins. This tree grew in a dry, lonely place. Where it seemed hopeless.
Jesus came and walked where we are, a dry, lonely and,at times, hopeless place.
The box was to be covered with gold. Gold is a picture of the diety of Christ. Though He was a man, still He was God. The gold also speaks to me of the streets of gold in heaven. My friend, your feet can also make a noise on the streets of gold in heaven someday when you get there, but we must go there through Jesus. (Rev.21:21)
Moses was told to make a lid of pure gold and place it on top of the ark. The lid was called the Mercy Seat. It was the most important part of the Tabernacle. This was the place God promised to show mercy to the people.
Mercy is shown to people who deserve to be punished for sin. Mercy was shown to the thief on the cross. (Luke 23:43)
The Publican in the temple was shown mercy:... God, be merciful to me, a sinner. (Luke 18:13)
Mercy seat is the same word as propitiation. It means to satisfy or appease. God is holy and man is sinful.
Without forgiveness and cleansing, God and man can never be in fellowship. Christ satisfied God's demand for righteousness. We learned in the Old Testament, the High Priest took the blood of an animal as a sheep behind the curtain once a year. In this way the people's sins were covered for another year. This was called the Day Of Atonement or the Day of Covering.
When Jesus spilled His blood it covers sin forever. Sins committed in the past, in the present or today, sins that will be committed in the future are covered. Christ went into the Holiest place one time for all people, He presented His blood to His Father. In this way He made payment for man, now man can be free from sin forever.
Man was told to leave the Garden of Eden. He turned and walked away from God, hopeless. God told him to stop and listen to Him. God reminded him of the seed who was coming. Man looked to the future when the seed would hang on a cross. God demonstrated to man what the seed would do.
God killed an animal, shed it's blood and skinned it. He sacrificed it on an altar showing man that the seed (Jesus) would in the future be sacrificed on a cross. God cut the skin in half and He covered Adam and Eve with each piece, showing that the righteousness of the seed (Jesus) will cover the sinner who believes. This was the first message on salvation preached.
Yes, my friend, the seed who came is Jesus Christ. By His death on the cross, He died in your place. By His death, His blood has power to cover your sin. In this way He took your unrighteousness, and He put His righteousness on you. However, each of us need to activate this by our faith, as a cellphone will not work if we don't activate it.
Just call out to the Lord for mercy as the Publican in the temple.
